A WhatsApp Community screen showing several sub-groups organized under one business umbrella

WhatsApp Channels vs. broadcast campaigns already covers two shapes — public one-way updates, and opted-in one-to-one messaging. Communities are a third, different mechanism entirely: several related groups, organized under one umbrella, where members inside each group can actually talk to each other, not just receive messages from the business.

What a Community actually is

A WhatsApp Group is one chat room where everyone talks to everyone. A Community is a hub that organizes several related groups under one umbrella — for example, a “VIP Customers” community containing separate groups for “Events,” “Feedback,” and “Announcements,” or a business organizing groups by region, product line, or support tier.

What this looks like in practice

  • Segmented sub-groups — regional groups, product-specific groups, or tiered groups (VIP vs. general), each with its own conversation instead of one chaotic mixed chat.
  • Broadcast to everyone at once when needed — announcements or policy changes can go out across every group in the community simultaneously, without losing the segmentation the rest of the time.
  • Actual peer conversation, not just business-to-customer — members inside a group can talk to each other, which neither a Channel nor a broadcast campaign allows.
  • A directory members can navigate — someone joining finds the right group for their region or interest instead of being dumped into one undifferentiated list.

Why this is a third option, not a repeat

Channels are public and one-way, with no membership structure. Broadcast campaigns are opted-in and one-to-one, template-approved. Communities are neither — a membership structure with actual group conversation, organized into segments. Picking the right one depends on whether the goal is broad reach (Channel), individual conversion (broadcast), or sustained group engagement within specific segments (Community).
