It’s easy to conflate these because they’re usually needed together, but they’re two different layers, and knowing which one you actually have (or don’t) matters when you’re figuring out what to ask for.
WhatsApp Business API: the infrastructure
This is the underlying access — verified business messaging, message templates, the plumbing that lets a business send and receive WhatsApp messages at scale and through automated systems instead of one person on one phone. See WhatsApp Business API Provider.
WhatsApp Business AI: what runs on top
This is the layer that actually reads and responds to messages — qualifying leads, answering questions, booking appointments — using the API as its channel. Without the API underneath it, there’s nothing for the AI to run on. See WhatsApp Business AI.
Why the distinction matters
If you already have verified API access and just want automation on top, you only need the AI layer. If you’re starting from a personal WhatsApp number or the free app, you need the API access first — the AI has nothing proper to plug into otherwise.
Where this fits
Verticalbot provides both, separately or together — API access and verification if you’re starting from scratch, or just the AI layer if the infrastructure is already in place.
