Most AI chatbot agencies show a similar demo — the bot answers questions, sounds reasonably smart, and the sales pitch feels convincing. The questions that actually separate a good vendor from a generic one aren’t about the demo. They’re about what happens once real customers, real edge cases, and real integrations are involved.
What to actually ask
- “What’s the realistic timeline, and what do you need from us?” — a vague answer or an unrealistically short one are both red flags; a real vendor can explain the phases and what slows each one down.
- “Show me what happens when the bot can’t answer something.” — watch whether the handoff to a person carries the full conversation history, or whether the customer has to explain themselves again from scratch.
- “How does this actually connect to our systems?” — a vendor who can explain their integration approach clearly (not just “yes we can integrate anything”) is more likely to deliver something that actually works in production.
- “Does this sound like our brand, or like a generic bot with our logo on it?” — compare sample responses against your actual brand voice, not a polished demo script.
- “What happens after launch?” — an agent needs ongoing tuning as real conversations reveal gaps; a vendor who disappears after go-live is a real risk.
- “What’s the one metric that tells us this worked?” — a vendor who can name a specific number (response time, conversion rate, cost per resolved inquiry) understands the business case, not just the technology.
Why this matters more than a feature comparison
Feature lists look nearly identical across most vendors in this space. The gap shows up in execution — how well the escalation actually works, how deeply the integration actually goes, whether the vendor is still around three months after launch. Those are the questions a demo alone won’t answer.
Where this fits
This is the same standard we hold ourselves to — building around your actual workflow and data, not handing over a templated script with your logo on it. Ask us these same questions — we’d rather answer them upfront than after a contract’s signed.
