A dashboard showing WhatsApp leads tagged by source: ads, Google button, and organic

With leads arriving from Click-to-WhatsApp ads, a Google Business Profile button, and plain organic search all landing in the same inbox, a real question follows fast: which one is actually working? WhatsApp itself doesn’t answer that — it doesn’t pass referrer data or accept UTM parameters inside the chat.

Where the tracking actually happens

  • UTM tags work on the page before the handoff, not inside WhatsApp. A wa.me link or ad destination can carry utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign in its query string — that data lives on the click, not in the conversation that follows.
  • WhatsApp often strips the visible link preview, especially in template messages — this looks like tracking broke, but the parameters were already captured before the click completed.
  • The real tagging happens once a lead is saved. The source, campaign, and outcome get attached to the lead record at that point — not something recovered from inside the chat itself.

What this actually looks like in practice

A lead entering from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad gets tagged “WhatsApp Ad” with its campaign UTM the moment it’s captured. A lead from the Google Business Profile button gets tagged separately. From there, cost-per-qualified-lead and lead-to-customer conversion rate can be compared channel by channel — which is the only way to actually know whether the ad spend or the organic listing is doing the work.

Why this matters once more than one channel is live

Without this, every WhatsApp lead looks identical regardless of where it came from — which makes it impossible to tell whether ad spend is paying off or whether the free Google button is quietly doing most of the work.

Where this fits

Sits underneath everything already built for WhatsApp Business AI and marketing in WhatsApp — the measurement layer, not a new lead-generation channel itself. Tell us which channels you’re currently running and we’ll set up tagging that actually tells you what’s working.
