A smartphone showing a UPI payment confirmation screen next to a chat conversation

This is explainer/awareness content about infrastructure that has not launched yet. It requires RBI regulatory approval and is currently in pilot. Nothing described here is a capability Verticalbot or any vendor can offer today.

India is building dedicated infrastructure for AI agents to make UPI payments directly — not a speculative idea, but an actual protocol in pilot with real institutions involved.

What’s actually being built

NPCI is developing a “Unified Agent Protocol” (UAP) that would let an AI agent make UPI payments on a user’s behalf, within spending limits the user sets in advance. It’s built on UPI Reserve Pay — a one-time, consent-based authorization, so an agent can transact within those limits without a PIN prompt on every purchase.

Who’s already piloting it

Razorpay and NPCI announced a pilot bringing agentic payments to Claude in early 2026 — ordering food, groceries, and everyday essentials from platforms like Zomato, Swiggy, Zepto, and BigBasket without leaving the conversation. Anthropic and other agentic AI companies are named participants in the pilot.

Where this is likely to show up first

Low-value, repetitive purchases — groceries, daily essentials, recurring orders — are the expected first use case, since spending-limit guardrails make them the lowest-risk place to start. Higher-value or one-off purchases will likely take longer to trust to an agent.

Why this is worth knowing about now, even unlaunched

This is a genuinely new piece of India’s payments infrastructure, not an incremental feature — and it’s being built with AI agents as a first-class participant, not bolted on after the fact. If it launches as planned, it changes what’s possible for any AI agent operating in a commerce context, including ones running on WhatsApp.

What this means for Verticalbot’s own work — today

Nothing changes yet. Our WhatsApp Business AI and AI agent development work today handles conversation, qualification, and booking — not payment execution. If and when this protocol reaches general availability with regulatory approval, it’s a natural extension worth revisiting. Get in touch if you want to be first in line when it does.
